Noise from a horse rink carries further than most people expect. Add in the open sightlines that come with a large riding arena, and you've got a property that feels exposed in more ways than one. That's exactly what this client was dealing with - and a living privacy screen was the right call.
We planted 17 Green Giant arborvitaes, each at 6 feet tall, running the length of the rink. Green Giants are one of the best choices for this kind of work. They grow fast, hold their dense shape year-round, and don't need a lot of fuss once they're established. In a few years, this row is going to be a solid wall of green that blocks both the view and the noise.
But planting the trees was just one piece of it. We ran irrigation along the entire row so each tree gets consistent water right at the root zone. That's not optional - it's what separates trees that thrive from trees that just survive. We also wrapped the planting area with deer fencing. Deer will absolutely target fresh arborvitaes, and losing even a few of these trees would set the whole screen back significantly.
This is the kind of job where the planning matters as much as the planting. Spacing, irrigation coverage, deer protection - get those right from the start and the trees do the rest. Skip any one of them and you're fighting an uphill battle.
A well-designed privacy screen like this adds real value to a property. It's not just about what you can't see or hear - it's about what you've built for the long term. These trees are going to keep getting better every single year.
