Old wood retaining walls have a shelf life. They rot, they lean, and eventually they just stop doing the job they were built for. When that happens, you're not just dealing with an eyesore - you're dealing with a real erosion and structural problem that only gets worse the longer you wait.

Here's what we were working with: a failing wood wall along the front of the home that needed to come out completely. In its place, we built a 3-tier decorative block retaining wall that steps up the grade cleanly and holds everything in check. The block material we used has a rough-cut granite texture that looks sharp against the cedar shake exterior - way more finished than what was there before.

The tiered design isn't just for looks, either. Each level creates a defined planting bed, which makes future landscaping a lot more manageable. Instead of fighting a sloped, unstable front yard, the homeowner now has organized, flat sections to work with. That's a big deal if you ever want to plant flowers, shrubs, or anything else without worrying about it washing downhill.

Block walls like this are built to outlast wood by a long shot. No rotting, no leaning over time from moisture damage, and no need to redo it in 10 years. The graded soil out front is ready for seed or sod, and the whole area already reads as a much cleaner, more intentional space.

If your old wall is starting to bow, crack, or just look rough, that's usually the sign it's time to replace it - not patch it. A properly built retaining wall does a real job. We take that seriously on every build.
