Sloped yards are one of the trickiest things to work with in hardscaping. A 44-inch grade difference isn't just a cosmetic challenge - it's a structural one. Without the right approach, you end up with a patio that shifts, cracks, or floods every time it rains. That's exactly what we were dealing with here.

To handle the elevation change, we built an interlocked wall system from the ground up. Proper drainage fabric was laid in to manage water movement before it becomes a problem. This isn't something you skip to save time. It's what separates a patio that holds up for decades from one that starts failing in a few years.

For the surface, we went with Cambridge Onyx Natural pavers finished with a Coal border running the full perimeter. The Coal border gives the whole surface a clean, defined edge - it frames everything and pulls the look together without being overdone. The texture of the Onyx Natural is subtle but rich, somewhere between slate and natural stone.

The steps were built right into the wall system, so the transition from grade to patio level feels natural rather than tacked on. A raised landing near the back door ties the entry point into the overall layout without breaking the flow. Everything is connected, and it reads as one cohesive hardscape rather than a bunch of separate pieces.

Getting the foundation right on a job like this is everything. The surface is what people see, but the drainage, compaction, and wall system underneath it are what make it last. This is the kind of work that pays off long after the job is done.
